THE COOK FAMILY

Contributed by Carl W. Nichols

There is no doubt that Cook family of the Dutch Fork is of German origin, however the details of this family’s arrival in S. C. are not made clear by the Colonial record.  It seems likely that the Dutch Fork Cooks are part of the Koch family of Wingerlingen near Reutlingen, Germany.  Members of the Kinard family came to S. C. in 1744 from nearby Undingen and were descendants of Johannes Keinat (Carpenter) and Lucia Koch of Winterlingen.  Some of the Kinard family settled in the area of Prosperity and were neighbors of the Cook family.

A possibility is that the Koch family came to S. C. in 1754 on the Priscilla.  Many of the German immigrants on this ship were brought by Hans Jerg Dreher and Johann Michael Stingli from the Reutlingen area and through misfortune were not able to pay all of their passage.  Hence many were indentured servants and petitioned years later for bounty grants.  Another issue faced by the immigrants who came on the Priscilla was the outbreak of the Cherokee War not long after their arrival in the Colony.  The identities of most of the immigrants on the Priscilla are not specified in the Colonial record of S. C.

The earliest records of the Cook family in the S. C. Dutch Fork date from 1766.  The petitions of Jacob and Bastian Cook for bounty surveys in S. C. were heard at the Colonial Council meeting of 2 September 1766.  In the following year a 150 acre survey was made for Jacob Cook located at Prosperity, S. C.  Bastian Cook’s warrant of 1766 expired and on 2 March 1773 he again petitioned for bounty and obtained a 100 acre survey adjacent the land grant of Jacob Cook.  In 1774 Jacob and Ann Cook obtained 100 acre bounty grants near St. Jacob’s Church in Lexington Co., S. C.  The petitions for these grants state that they were Foreign Protestants.

A deed of 1775 involves the sale of land by Sebastian Kock and wife, Rosannah, to William Summer (S. C. Magazine of Ancestral Research Vol 11, p. 10, 1983).  The land had been granted to her in the name of Rosannah Singling.  Rosannah Singling was a daughter of Martin Singley, born about the time of the arrival of the Singley family in S. C.

Both Jacob and Sebastian Cook were in Capt. Robert Pearis’ Co., S. C. Royalists, at Savannah, Georgia (M. J. Clark, "Loyalists in the Southern Campaign of the Rev. War," Vol. 1, p. 23).  Sebastian (as "Boston") Cook is reported to have died on 1 December 1779 during the tour of duty.

Martin and Jacob Cook, after the Revolutionary War, were joint owners of the land grants of Jacob and “Posteen” Cook at Prosperity.  In 1794, Martin Cook sold half of both grants to Jacob Cook (Nby Deeds D-2, p. 196).  Martin and Jacob Cook married Kinard sisters who are believed to have been daughters of Mathias Kinard, Sr.

An autobiography of Joseph Jasper Getsinger, a Baptist Minister, tells of his grandparents, Joseph Getsinger and Margaret Cook (Dutch Fork Digest, 4(2):21, 1989).  He calls his grandmother Mary Cook, stating that she was the daughter of Jacob Cook, a farmer, who lived near Prosperity, S. C.  He goes on to tell that she had a brother Jacob Cook who had left family near Prosperity.

The family of Jacob Cook is described by Wendell H. Cook, Jr. in "Passage to the Present: The Story of a Southern Family" (1997).

DAUGHTERS  OF  JACOB  COOK,  SR.

MARY COOK.  Mary Buzheart died in 1827 willing an item of her personal estate to her neice, Rosannah Cook (Nby Wills L-288).  Rosannah Cook was the daughter of Jacob Cook and Rebecca Kinard.  Mary Buzheart was evidently a sister of Jacob and Martin Cook.

MARGARET COOK.  According to the autobiography of Joseph Jasper Getsinger (1835-1905), his grandfather, Joseph Getsinger, married a daughter of Jacob Cook, Sr.   Joseph Getsinger (Kitsinger), enlisted in 1777 during the Revolutionary War, 3rd Regt. (B. C. Moss, “Roster of S. C. Patriots in the American Revolution,” p. 541).  He was listed as a prisoner on 29 December 1778.  In 1789, Joseph Kitcinger obtained a 64 acre tract near Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pomaria, which was sold by Joseph and Margarith Getsinger in 1796 (Newberry Deeds E-238).  They moved to Barnwell District, S. C.  Joseph Getsinger died 15 March 1816 and Margaret Getsinger died in 1824.

Joseph Getsinger was probably a son of John Veit Getsinger and had an older brother, Matthew, born about 1749 who died in 1779 while serving in the Co. of Lieut. Col. Joseph Robinson Royalists in Georgia.

Joseph Getsinger and Margaret Cook had the following children: John who died in 1815 after returning home from an Indian War; Mary who married Owen Barker; Rosa who married Samuel Bishop; William, who died on 7 June 1879, married Mary Hannah Creech; Andrew, died on 20 November 1840; Elizabeth, who married Dennis Williams; and Jacob Getsinger who married Nancy Weekly.
