CHARLES METTS FAMILY


   The earliest record of Charles Metts in the Dutch Fork was his purchase
in 1765 of land on Second Creek in Newberry County, SC (Virtress to
Stockman, Nby Deeds A-145).  Charles Metts was the father of Henry Metts,
according to a description of the family written in 1859 by Henry Richard
Metts, grandson of Henry Metts.  According to Henry Richard Metts' document,
Charles Metts was father of Henry Metts and Henry Metts had sisters who
married a Souter and a Cromer.
 
CHILDREN OF CHARLES METTS
 
I. Henry Metts, said to have died in October 1812, age 60, wife named
Elizabeth. Following the Rev. War, Henry Mitts received compensation on 2
May 1786 for Militia duty in Col. Philemon Waters' Regt. (Stub Indent 2610).
In 1798, Henry and Elizabeth Metts were witnesses to the will of Frederick
Cromer (Nby Wills B-245).  Henry Metts and wife are said to have had 6 sons
and 2 daughters. Family is described below.
 
II. Anna Catherine Metts, married Martin Souter, son of John Souter.
 
A. George Souter, married Rebecca Margaret Koon, born 21 July 1772, died
1849, daughter of John Henry Koon and Maria Ursula Shealy.
B. Henry Souter.
C. Jacob Souter, born 16 May 1792, died 16 August 1880, married Rachel Vardeman.
D. Catherine J. Souter, born 25 February 1794, died 12 October 1839, married
Jacob Suber, born 11 September 1793, died 16 Apr 1852, son of Conrad Suber
and Lucy Wicker.
E. Elizabeth Souter.
 
III. Daughter married ___ Cromer (probably Margaret, born 1763, died 1841,
wife of John George Cromer, Sr., born 1767, died 1825, son of Frederick
Cromer and wife, Sybella).

A. John Metts, died January 1835, married Mary Magdalene Koon, died 12
February 1833, daughter of Henry Koon and Catherine Eve Epting (Nby
Equities, 1836, Box 21, Pkg. 16).
 
1. Elizabeth Metts, born about 1807, married John Adam Wicker, died 1861,
son of Simon Wicker, Sr. Moved to Talladega County, AL.
2. Henry Metts, born 24 September 1809, died 1855, married 6 February
1845, Sara Caroline Vance. Moved to Pontotoc (now Lee) County, MS.
3. Martha Metts, born 16 August 1812, died 3 January 1898, married (as third
wife) George A. Setzler, son of John Adam Setzler and Catherine Leitner.
4. Simeon Metts.
5. Mary Metts, born 6 Apr 1816, died 6 June 1887, married Lemuel Lane,
born about 1816, died 27 July 1866.
6. Dr. George Metts, died 19 October 1841.
7. Delilah Metts, born about 1819, died January 1862, married Jacob Belton
Counts, born January 1821, died June 1875, son of John Adam Counts and Sarah
Ruff.
8. Silas Metts did not marry.
 
B. Anna Barbara Metts, born 10 August 1778, died 1 April 1858, married
Andrew Wicker, born about 1775, died after 1830, son of Matthias Wicker, Sr.
Moved in fall of 1818 to Pike County, MS.
 
1. Adam Wicker, born 10 June 1801, died 27 March 1859, married Rosannah
Powell, born 3 July 1805, Madison County, GA, died 20 January 1853.

2. Sarah (Sally) Wicker, born 6 October 1805, died 13 March 1883, married 1)
William Glass Martin, Sr.; married 2) David Sandel, born 8 November 1792,
died 13 December 1874.
3. Enoch George Wicker, born about 1810, married 1) 25 December 1838, Mary
Ann Woodward, born 1817, died after 1850; married 2) 24 January 1872, Mrs.
Nancy B. Hardwick McKnight.  Lived in Amite County, MS.
4. Middleton Wicker, born 9 October 1812.  Died young.
 
C. Henry Metts, Jr., born 1781, died 14 March 1858, married 1) Rebecca Lake;
married 2) Mariah Missouri E. Lake, born about 1807, died after
1870, daughter of David Lake and Margaret Wyatt, and sister of first wife.
Children by Rebecca Lake:
1. Thomas Metts (moved to Asheville, NC).
2. Roderick P. Metts, d. before 1850.
 
Children by Maria Missouri Lake:
3. Frances Ellen Metts, b. about 1830, married Robert E. Lemon, b. about 1821.
4. Sarah Ann Metts, b. about 1831, married J. Lemuel Buzhardt.
5. David George McDuffie Metts, born 25 March 1833, died 6 October 1888,
married Sallie C. Hargrove, born 10 January 1833, died 10 March 1908.
6. William Glenn Metts, born 3 July 1836, died March 1920, married 1)
Rebecca A. Sligh; married 2) Martha Frances (Mattie) Wicker, born 7 February
1853, died 9 July 1926.
 
D. Phillip Metts, died 16 May 1842, married Rebecca Suber, born 7
September 1794, died 25 August 1862, daughter of Michael Suber and Elizabeth
Glymph. The family is described in Nby Equities, 1842, Box 28, Pkg. 2.
After the death of Phillip Metts, the family moved to Central, MS.

Book L, p. 646).
 
G. George Metts born 28 July 1790, died 26 May 1860, married 1) April
1814, Lucy Strother, b. 1793, died March 1823, daughter of Richard Strother;
married 2) October 1826, Anna Souter, born about 1800, died
after 1880.  Moved to Laurens County, SC.  George is buried in the Shady
Grove Church cemetery, Laurens County.
 
Children by Lucy Strother:
1. Henry Richard Metts, born 15 April 1816, died July 1860, married Lucretia
Holland.
2. John Adam Metts, born 25 October 1819, died January 1860, married 1)
August 1844, Araminta Lee, died September 1844; married 2) November 1846,
Mrs. Ann Rice.
3. William Franklin Metts, born 11 February 1821, died 31 January 1905,
married August 1844, Mary Williams.
 
Children by Anna Souter:
4. Middleton Berry Metts, born 14 September 1827, died about 1870, married
November 1857, Jane Berly.
5. Walter Boylston Metts, died 1 November 1879, married 8 June 1853,
Margaret Amanda McConnell, died 12 November 1862; married 2) Martha C.
Henley.  All three buried Rose Hill Cemetery, Yorkville, SC. Walter was a
lawyer in Yorkville.
