Frederick Shaffer Family

 Frederick Schaffer, a single man, obtained a 50 acre survey in 1751 on Crims Creek near Pomaria. An adjacent 50 acre for Shaffer was surveyed in 1772. Both tracts were later owned by the family of Peter Stockman.

 In 1772, a nearby 200 acre survey was made for Frederick Sheffer. This tract was sold in 1782 by Frederick Sheffer and wife, Elizabeth, to Peter Stockman (Newberry Deeds A-1087).

 Frederick Shaffer moved to the St. Peter's Piney Woods Church area near the old Orangeburgh- Ninety Six Dist. line. Frederick Shaffer and son, John Frederick Shaffer, are found on the 1800 census living in the area of St. Peter's (Piney Woods) Lutheran Church., Chapin, SC.

I. Mary Elizabeth Shafer, born 10 June 1765, died 6 January 1826, married John Peter Shumpert, born 1 August 1753, died 29 November 1839. They lived in the St. Peter's Piney Woods section of Lexington Distrist, SC. (Schumpert bio contains more information on this family)

II. Ann Catherine Shaffer, believed to be wife of John Eberhardt Swittenberg, son of John Swittenberg and wife, Christiana.

III. John Frederick Shaffer, b. 18 August 1774 Lexington District SC, d. 24 October 1859 , Perry Co., AL. Frederick Shaffer bought a 100 acre tract on Camping Cr. in 1819 from Henry Hare of TN. In 1824, Frederick Shaffer sold 55A on Wateree br. of Camping Cr. to Christopher Wiggers (B. H. Holcomb, Memorialized Records).

 In the early 1820's, the family of John Frederick Shaffer moved to AL, and settled in the Brush Cr. section of Perry Co. In Perry Co., AL, John F. Shaffer married1) Magdaline Eichelberger, born about 1775, Newberry District, SC, died after 1812, daughter of Johann Eichelberger and Elizabeth Shealy and married 2) 14 December 1841, Priscilla Hopkins. His family lived in the Brush Creek section of Perry Co. John Frederick Shaffer is buried in the Mt. Hermon United Methodist Cemetery in Hale Co., AL.     A. Christiana Shafer, born about 1794, daughter of John Frederick Shafer, Sr. married George Gosper Monts, born about 1794, died after 1860, Perry Co., AL, son of Gosper Monts and Anna Mary Minick. They are found on the 1830 census of Pike Co., AL. Afterward, they lived in the Brush Creek section of Perry Co., AL.

    B. Eve Shaffer, born about 1795, died 1878, Williamson Co., TN, believed to be wife of Allen Nichols, born about 1787, died 1848, son of George Nichols and wife, Elizabeth. They had a son named Frederick Shafer Nichols.

    C. John M. Shaffer, born 19 November 1797 Lexington District, SC, died 10 August 1855 Choctaw Co. MS, married 1) 16 February 1823 in Perry Co., AL, Mary (Dolly) Smith, born 15 October 1804, died 6 September 1846 Choctaw Co., MS, daughter of Mark Smith and Sarah Cannon and married 2) after 1846 in Oktibbeha Co., MS, Lavinia Hall John and Mary (Dolly) Smith Shaffer are buried New Hope Presbyterian Cemetery, Webster Co., MS.     D. Mary Shaffer, born about 1800, married Luke Smith, died 1853, son of Matthew Smith. They settled in the Brush Creek section of Perry Co., AL.

    E. John Frederick Shaffer, Jr., born 9 December 1804 Lexington Dist., SC, died Jan 28, 1879 Pine Bluff, Clay Co., MS; married 24 January1828, in Perry Co., AL., Mary Ann Duke, born 11 August.1811 Perry Co., AL, died 10 July 1885 Pine Bluff, Clay Co., MS.
