The John Swygert Family

Recent information from Siegbert Frick of Lichtenstein, Germany  has provided documentation of this Schweikardt family from Erpfingen, Germany,  an area now known as Sonnenbuhl, Germany.

Johann Martin Schweikardt was born 7 December 1681 in Erpfingen, Reutlingen  District, Wuerttemberg, Germany. He died on 18 June 1744 in Erpfingen, Reutlingen  District, Wuerttemberg, Germany. He married Anna Barbara Riesch. They had one  son, Johannes (John) Schweikardt (Swigert) who was born 18 December 1720 in Germany. He married on 26 November 1742, Christina Catherina Riesch, daughter of Johannes Riesch and his wife, Christina. She was born 30 May 1718 in Erpfingen, Reutlingen District, Wuerttemberg, Germany.

John Swigert obtained a 200 acre land grant located at the fork of Broad and Saluda Rivers on 23 November 1754. Council Journal records show that he came aboard the ship Priscilla in 1754, commanded by Capt. Cattaman with wife and  2 children: John Martin age 7 and Margaret age 12.

II. Christina Catharina Schweikardt was born 3 November 1744, Erpfingen, Reutlingen  District, Wuerttemberg, Germany.
III. Hans (John) Martin Swygert was born 9 April 1747 Erpfingen, Reutlingen  District, Wuerttemberg, Germany and died about 1790 in the Dutch Fork, SC. Below is a list of persons that are believed to be his children
IV. Rachel Schweikardt was born 5 May 1750 Erpfingen, Reutlingen District, Wuerttemberg, Germany. She died 9 October 1750 in Erpfingen, Reutlingen District, Wuerttemberg,  Germany.
V. Johannes Schweikardt was born 3 April 1752 Erpfingen, Reutlingen District,  Wuerttemberg, Germany. He died young.

     A. John Swygert born in 1773, died 12 April 1855 in Lexington District, SC; buried St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Irmo, SC.

1. Jesse S. Swygert born 13 July 1802, died 31 January 1865, married 1)  Sally Weed born 1804 died 27 October 1844, daughter of John Weed. Both are buried St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Irmo, SC. Jesse married about 1845  2) (as her second husband) Gemima Smith/Bickley born 17 July 1807, died  5 February 1886, daughter of Thomas Smith and Anna Katherine Leaphart. Both  are buried St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Irmo, SC. Gemima/Jemima Smith/Bickley  Swygert was first married to Jacob N. Bickley.

    h. Paul Swygert born about 7 April 1850, died 20 January 1868; buried  St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Irmo, SC, 17 years, 9 months and 12 days. (1850 Annotated Lexington County Census HH 277).

    j. Mary M. O. Swygert born 3 December 1851, died March 1862.
2. John J. Swygert, Jr. born 1 April 1807 died April 1862, married Mary  Martha Hiller born about 1810 in Lexington County, SC, died in 1874 Lexington  County, SC. She is buried in Swygert Cemetery on Scott Hill, Chapin, SC.
    a. Henry Adam Swygert born about 1843.
    b. Mary Ann Barbara Swygert born 8 December 1848.
    c. Amanda Elizabeth Swygert born 4 March 1851.
    d. Samuel Swygert died as an infant; buried in Swygert Cemetery on Scott Hill, Chapin, SC.
3. Jacob Swygert born 12 August 1808, died 10 August 1895, married 18 January  1831, Elizabeth Wingard born 16 January 1808, died 16 January 1897. Both are buried at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Smith County, MS. (This family changed the spelling of Swygert to Swigert when they moved to Mississippi)

    b. Mary Ann Elizabeth Swigert born 3 September 1833 Lexington County,  SC, died 3 August 1910 Smith County, MS, buried at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Smith County, MS.
    c. Barbara Swigert born 18 July 1835 Lexington County, SC, died 20 August  1858 Smith County, MS, buried at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Smith County, MS.
    d. Jacob Samuel Swigert born 1 December 1836. Died in Civil War.
    e. Rachel Swigert born 18 April 1839.
    f. Reuben Swigert born 3 January 1841. Died in Civil War.
    g. James Swigert born 12 October 1842. Died in Civil War.
    h. George Swigert born 10 November 1844. Died in Civil War.
    i. Noah Swigert born 2 April 1847. Died in 1947
B. Christian Swygert born 15 March 1779 Dutch Fork, SC, died 14 September  1841 Lexington County, SC. He was buried 15 September 1841. He married Margaret Hallman, daughter of Isaac Hallman. She was born in 1785 in Charleston, SC  and died 7 May 1860 in Lexington County, SC. Both were buried in family graves  on Hollow Creek, site unknown. They had the following children:
1. John Martin Swygert born 28 January 1808 Lexington County, SC, died 11 December 1884 in Smith County, MS; married 25 February 1829, Anna Barbara (Nancy) Derrick, daughter of William Thomas Derrick Sr. and Catherine Monts.  Nancy was born 10 February 1805 Lexington County, SC and died 16 May 1862  in Smith County, MS. Both are buried in Providence Lutheran Church, Burns, MS. They had the following children: (This family also changed the spelling of Swygert to Swigert when they moved to Mississippi)
    a. Mary Magdalena Swigert born 12 September 1829 Lexington County, died  4 June 1912 MS; buried Providence Lutheran Church, Burns, MS; married 3 December 1846 in Lexington County, to Josiah Caughman born 1824 Lexington County, died 6 June 1863 in Vicksburg, MS. Josiah served in the Civil War as SSGT Company G 5 Reg. MS Infantry CSA and was a son of Daniel Caughman  and Mary Shealy.
    b. Jacob Hazeal Swigert born 16 December 1831 Lexington County, died 2 December 1833 in Lexington County, believed to be buried in the Addy-Swygert Cemetery.
    c. Rosalie Amanda Swigert born 23 January 1834 Lexington County, SC, died  23 September Burns, MS; married 9 May 1850 in Lexington County, SC to Richard Hallman, son of Aberhart (Hartley) Hallman and Christena Oswalt. Richard was born 24 March 1834 Lexington County, SC, died 19 August 1899 MS. Both buried Providence Lutheran Church, Burns, MS.
    d. Meter Catharine (Mitty) Swigert born 12 July 1836 Lexington County, SC, died 3 December 1850 Lexington County; believed to be buried in Addy-Swygert  Cemetery.
    e. Joanna Antemisee Swigert born 13 January 1839 Lexington County, SC, died 21 October 1901 MD; buried Providence Lutheran Church, Burns, MS.
    f. Rufus Job Swigert born 20 May 1841 Lexington County, SC, died 27 June 1864 in the Battle of Atlanta, near Marietta, GA.

John Zeno Swygert born 9 July 1820 Lexington County, SC, died 4 October 1889 Haralson, Coweta County, GA; married 24 December 1840 to Mitty Ann Addy, daughter of John Simeon Addy and Catherine Taylor. She was born 25  July 1822 Lexington County, SC, died 3 May 1899 Coweta County, GA. Both  buried Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Haralson, GA. They had the following children:
    a. Reby Catherine Swygert born 9 September 1840 Lexington County, SC,  married 1861, William Thomas Wilson.
    b. Sibby Roxeanna Swygert born 26 February 1843 Lexington County, SC,  died 1 April 1912; married William Daniel Caldwell, born 9 January 1844,  died 20 July 1900. Both buried Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Haralson, Coweta County, GA.
    c. Morgan Govan Swygert born 10 November 1845 Lexington County, SC, died 22 December 1880 Haralson, GA; buried Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Haralson,  GA; married 5 January 1871, Martha Madora (Dora) Nixon, born 30 November 1854 Coweta County, GA, died 16 April 1936 Spalding County, GA; buried  Haralson Baptist Church, Haralson, GA.
    d. Henrietta Swygert born 25 February 1847 Lexington County, SC, died  19 March 1931. Never married.
    e. Marion Shields Swygert born 15 April 1849 Lexington County, SC, died  27 October 1900 Haralson, GA; married 1 May 1873 Coweta County, GA, Eliza Summers. He is buried at Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Haralson, GA.
    f. Arthur Dekalb Swygert born about 1851 Lexington County, SC; married Izora Morgan.
    g. Efird Calhoun Swygert born 4 September 1854 Merriwether County, GA, died 13 June 1940; married Mary Lovella McCalla, died 15 December 1903.  He is buried in Senoia City Cemetery, Senoia, GA.
    h. Sarah Margaret Ann Clay Swygert born 24 October 1855 Merriwether County,  GA, died 22 November 1924 Coweta County, GA; married James Jackson Thompson.  She is buried Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Haralson, GA.
    i. Christian Simeon Swygert born 3 April 1862, died 25 April 1862.
5. Emanuel Zeddo Swygert born 22 March 1822 Lexington County, SC, died 7 November 1861 Hilton Head, SC; married 26 June 1845 Mittie Ann Crout, daughter of David Crout and Sarah (Sally) Rice. She was born 3 August 1828 Lexington County, SC, died 19 May 1903 Lexington County, SC. He was buried in a common grave on Hilton Head Island, SC. She was buried in Addy-Swygert Cemetery (Carl Swygert's pasture). They had the following children:
    a. Enoch Swygert born 28 August 1846 Lexington County, SC, died 14 September 1921 Lexington County, SC; married 1)18 December 1865, Cornelia Caroline Adams, daughter of William F. Adams and Nancy Caroline Boyd. She was born 9 February 1851 Lexington County, SC, died 22 July 1895 Lexington County, SC. They are buried Cedar Grove Church Cemetery. Enoch married 2) 19 March  1896, Clara Jane Moore, born 5 January 1848 Saluda County, SC, died 26 May 1934 (Confederate Home) Columbia, SC. She was buried Fulmer Cemetery  (behind Neely Derrick's house).
    b. Edith (Eady) Swygert born 27 January 1849 Lexington County, SC, died  18 February 1891 Lexington County, SC; married James Zacaria Adams, son of William F. Adams and Nancy Caroline Boyd. He was born 17 December 1843 Newberry County, SC, died 31 October 1931 Lexington County, SC. They were  buried Addy-Swygert Cemetery (Carl Swygert's pasture).
    c. Laura Swygert born 1 May 1851 Lexington County, SC, died 10 June 1881 Lexington County, SC; married about 1866, James Wade Jumper, son of James  Jumper and Sarah Leaphart. He was born 8 April 1843, died 26 January 1914. He was buried Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, SC. She was buried Addy-Swygert  Cemetery (Carl Swygert's pasture).
    d. Josephus Swygert born 19 November 1854 Lexington County, SC, died 14  August 1886 Lexington County, SC; married 1849 in SC, Laura Lybrand, daughter of Samuel Wesley Lybrand and Beulah E. Fikes. She was born 8 February 1856.
    e. Zilla Sovenia Swygert born 5 June 1856 Lexington County, SC, died 3 August 1875 Lexington County, SC; buried Addy-Swygert Cemetery (Carl Swygert's  pasture).

He was born 4 January 1823 Lexington County, SC, died 16 January 1863 Lexington County, SC. They are buried Union Lutheran Church, Saluda County, SC. Elizabeth married 2) 14 June 1885, John  Rall, son of Jacob Rall, Jr. and Elizabeth Gartman. He was born 1800 Lexington  County, died 1892 Lexington County, SC. He was buried St. John's Lutheran  Church, Lexington County, SC.
7. Eliza A. Swygert born 1827, died 1879 Redland, AR; married 28 November  1844, Robert Henry Bryson Jr., born 1825 Laurens District, SC, died in 1860  Ouachita County, Carouse Township, AR, son of Robert Henry Bryson. They had the following children:
