Hans George Wertz Family

Jerg Heinrich Wertz (Daylaborer) was born 8 December 1708, the son of Hans Georg Wertz and wife Anna Catharina of Holfelzinfen, Duchy of Württemberg.  The father, Hans Georg Wertz, was born 20 March 1683 and died 25 April 1716. Jerg Heinrich Wertz married 1) 26 July 1731, Maria Barbara Sparn, born 17 August 1705, died 27 June 1751, by whom he had seven children.  He married 2) 1752, Anna Barbara Brendlin, born 19 November 1726, daughter of Johannes Brendlin and Anna Breuning of Holzelfingen.

CHILDREN OF JERG HEINRICH WERTZ AND MARIA BARBARA SPARN

I. Margaretha Werz, born 6 September 1732, married in Holzelfingen, Johannes Meck (Baker).  They came to SC in 1752 and Johannes Michen petitioned for bounty for Margarita and their child, Christian Haney, 6 wks. old.   She was awarded a 100 acre bounty grant on Crims Creek and in 1796, as Margaret Clarendon of Savannah, GA, she sold the grant to Peter Stockman (Newberry Deeds C-1067). Johannes Meck was a Baker in Charleston where the couple lived after coming to SC.
II.  Catharina Werz, born 5 February 1737, died 20 January 1739.
III. Johann Georg Werz, born/died 1741.
IV.  Jerg Adam Werz, born 24 September 1742, died September 1746.
V. Andreas Wertz, born 1745, died September 1746.
VI.  Anna Maria Wertz, born July 1747.
VII. Anna Catharina Wertz, born 10 March 1750.

Jerg Heinrich Wertz came to SC in 1752 with his mother, Anna Catharina Wertz, and daughter, Margaretha Meck. As George Henry Wertz he was granted a 150 acre tract on waters of Crims Creek near the town of Little Mountain.  Precept date from the plat of his bounty land indicates that his petition was heard by the SC Provincial Council on 30 October 1752.  His petition was omitted from the Colonial record. The acreage of the bounty grant is consistent at that time with a wife and one child. Adjacent this tract was the 50 acre bounty grant of the same date to Catherine Wertz, the mother of George Henry Wertz.

In 1758, George Henry Werts (Wartz in recorded deed) bought the 250 acre grant of John Adam Witt on Crims Creek (Charleston Deeds B-4, p. 107).  In 1765, his bounty grant and the adjacent Catherine Wertz grant were sold to John Miller (Rosalyn Summer Sease indenture collection, Caroliniana Library).

In Bullow & Bullow to Wheeler (Newberry Deeds O-51) a 300 acre tract on Camping Creek was sold with the land described as having being previously owned by Barbara Miller who transferred the tract in 1778 to her son, George Henry Wirts.  This record provides evidence that Barbara Miller was the widow of George Henry Wertz and had remarried John Miller after the death of her first husband.

Jerg Heinrich Wertz had 10 known children by his two wives.  George Henry and John Werts were sons of Jerg Heinrich Wertz, and second wife, Anna Barbara Brendlin. They were born in SC.  The "Annals of Newberry" mentions that George Henry and John were brothers who served at the ages of 18 and 16 in the State Militia during the Revolutionary War..  The "Annals of Newberry" also tell that the wife (Barbara) of Adam Bedenbaugh, Sr. was a Wertz.

John Werts, Sr., son of Jerg Heinrich Wertz and Anna Barbara Brendlin was born about 1757 and died 15 April 1842.  He married Ann Catherine Hair who died in 1827, daughter of Peter Heer and Anna Maria Herrman.  John Werts made will 1 February 1837, proven 27 April 1842.

During the Revolutionary War, John Werts, Sr. first saw service late in 1779 at Savannah as a private in the company of Capt. Martin Livingston, SC Royalists.
