Ernest Frederick Wise Family

In 1752, the family of Ernst Friedrich Weiss arrived in SC, coming on the Rowand. At that time the family (as described in Council Journal Vol. 21, pt. 1, p. 48) consisted of wife and children: Maria 12; George 12; Felix 6 and Fred age 4. A 300 acre bounty grant to Ernst Friedrich Weiss was located on the north side of the Saluda River near the present site of the Lake Murray dam.

Ernst Friedrich Weiss and Maria Barbara Ruff were m. on 2 December1732 in the Evangelical Church of Nottingen, Baden, Germany. The church record indicates that the bridegroom was Catholic but wanted to marry in the Evangelical Church and raise his children in that faith. They lived in Obermutschelbach where birth records of their children are found.

An early history of this family is "History of the Wise and Wyse Family of S.C." by Frederick Calhoun Wyse, Jr. (1944). An updated genealogy of the family is "The Wise and Wyse Families of S.C." by Sybil & Wallace Harmon (1992).
