John Caspar Beyrle Family John Caspar Beyrle, arrived in SC, as a single man, coming on the ship Caladonia, in 1752. He later married (first wife unknown) and settled in the "Dutch Fork" part of present day Newberry County, SC. In 1757, he bought the land grant of Jacob Hoffner (Memorials 9:46) on Crims Creek and in the same year he purchased part of the adjacent Conrad Shirer land grant (Charleston Deeds H-3, P. 56). These lands are near Pomaria, SC. His name in the Charleston deed was Caspar Philip Byerly. According to the "Annals of Newberry, P. 631", there were four sons by Gasper's first wife, Gaspar, Syke, Martin, and Harmon. After the death of the first wife, Gaspar, Sr., married Miss Easter from the Fairfield District area of SC. Gaspar Byerly died in 1804 with will naming sons: John, Fred, Martin, Gasper, and Sibert; and daughters: Elizabeth, Margareta, and Mary (Newberry Wills E-59). The son, Harmon is mentioned in the "Annals of Newberry" as a child of the first wife, but not mentioned in the will. Harmon is mentioned as a son in the probate of Gaspar's estate (Newberry County South Carolina Estates, Box 3, Pkg 18). Children of John Gaspar Philip Byerly, Sr., and his first wife : I. This couple had two children, Elizabeth and Catherine Byerly, and they married Abel Dunkin/Duncan, Jr. and David Dunkin/Duncan respectively. David Dunkin is a cousin to Abel Dunkin, Jr. A. Abel Dunkin, Jr. was the son of Abel Dunkin, Sr. and wife Sarah _____ who lived in Clouds Creek area of Edgefield District (now Saluda County, SC). Moved with their Byerly and Dunkin parents to Perry County, AL: about 1826. On 25 January 1834, John S. Bailey sells 79 and 64/100 acres of land to Abel Dunkin, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth Dunkin (Perry County, AL Deed Book B, pg. 621). On 24 April 1833, Abel Dunkin, Jr. and John S. Berly enter into an agreement (Perry County, AL Deed/Mortgage Book B., pg 405). The agreement binds Abel Dunkin, Jr. to furnish and provide the said John S. Berly and his wife Margareth Berly worth and comfortable boarding and clothing during their natural life. 1. After the death of her sister, Rachel Caroline (Dunkin) Nichols, Mary Ellen married Joseph Land Nichols on 18 May 1887, in Perry County, AL. B. Catherine Byerly, born 29 June 1801, SC, died Perry County, AL., married David Dunkin, born 29 September 1798, SC, died about 1863, Perry County, AL. Moved to Perry County, AL, about 1826. On 4 October 1838, David Dunkin and John S. Bailey enter into an agreement (Perry County, AL Deed Book E, Pg 126). This agreement binds David Dunkin to provide for support and maintain the aforesaid John S. Bailey and his wife Margarett Byley in a comfortable manner during their natural lives. John Seibert Byerly sold his Lexington County, SC property to David Dunkin/Duncan 4 October 1838 (Perry County, AL Deed Book D, pg 349). On 7 May 1863, David Dunkin made his will (Perry County, AL Will Book B, pgs 172, 173, and 174) and left estate to wife, Catherine Dunkin. Children: 1. William C. Caty Carolina, born January 1832, Perry County, AL, died before 1900, married William R. Stone (first wife was her sister, Mary Ann Dunkin). 8. Patience Dunkin, born 7 June 1834, Perry County, AL, died unknown, married Amos Ellis. 9. Rebeca Dunkin, born 12 March 1836, Perry County, AL, died 9 February 1897, Perry County, AL, married J. W. III. Martin Byerly, born about 1770, SC, married Unknown. Moved to Amite County, MS about 1820. Moved about 1833 to Jasper County, TX. Many of the descendants of Martin Byerly were buried in the following cemeteries in Jasper County, TX: Memorial Park, Evergreen, Hope, Ebenezer, Hamilton, Gilgal, Campground, Little Hope, Zion Hill, Davis, and Magnolia Springs (Jasper County Cemeteries, by Mildred S. Wright, G. R. S., 1967). Two known sons of Martin, Adam and William Byerly, served in the Texas War of Independence and were in the Battle at the Siege of the Bexar. For their service (according to the book, Known Children: A. Adam Byerly, born about 1800, SC, married 30 January 1837, Nancy Ann Andrews in Amite County, MS, Marriage Book 2-B, Pg 253. Adam received a Bounty and two Donation Land Grants. The Bounty Land Grant. Under Bounty Warrant #3937, received 320 acres from the Secretary of War on 25 June 1836 for service from 17 October 1835 to 3 January 1836. This land in two surveys, 160 acres each in Medina County, TX, Patents #411and #412. The Donation Land Grants. Under Donation Certificate #164, received 320 acres from the Adjutant General on 9 July 1849 in Tyler County, TX, Patent #194, Vol 2. Under Donation Certificate #122, received another 320 acres in Tyler County, TX and later assigned/patented (Pat 208, Vol 2) to Thomas Collier on 27 October 1852. B. William Byerly, born about 1805. William received two Bounty Land Grants and one Donation Land Grant. The Bounty Land Grants. Under Bounty Warrant #3939, received 320 acres from the Secretary of War on 25 June 1838 for service from 17 October 1835 to 3 January 1836. This land located in Bexar County, TX and was patented on 17 April 1849, Pat #324, Vol 5. Under Bounty Warrant #3940, received 320 acres from Secretary of War on 25 June 1838 for service from 9 June to 9 October 1836. This land located in Edwards County, TX patented on 10 September 1849, Pat #483, Vol 4. The Donation Land Grant. Under Donation Certificate #159, received 640 acres from the Adjutant General on 9 May 1849 in Young County, TX This land in two tracts (148 and 492 acres) later assigned/patented to Frost Thorn (Pats 8 9, Abstracts 22 23) on 9 July 1875. IV. Harmon Byerly, born about 1776, SC, died after 1850, married Edith _____. Harmon Byerly and his family moved to Knox County, KY. Harmon is found as Harman Bailey on the 1820, 1830, and 1840 Census of Knox County, Richland Creek District, near Barbourville, KY. Harmon is found on the 1850 KY census as Harman Birely, 74, SC, wife Edith Birely, 58, SC, and son William Birely, 21, KY. Children of John Gaspar Philip Byerly, Sr., and second wife, Mary Easter: The surname of Gaspar's second wife is Easter (Annals of Newberry, P. 631). In Caspar's will he mentions her first name, Mary, so, Mary Easter. Children: V. Elizabeth Byerly, born about 1782, Newberry County, SC, died 4 May 1841, Newberry County, SC, married a Watts. Buried Berly cemetery, Newberry County, SC. Marker states "Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth Watts who departed this life May the 4th, 1841, in the 59th year of her age." Done at the expense of John Berly from the affection that he bore toward his sister. VI.Margaretta Byerly, born about 1784, Newberry County, SC. VII. John Byerly, born about 1788 Newberry County, SC, died 15 June 1855 Newberry County, SC, married about 1784,Barbara Werts, daughter of Capt. John Werts and Ann Catherine Hair. Both buried Berly cemetery, Newberry County, SC. John Byerly was the only son of Gasper Byerly, Sr., who remained in SC. John and his descendants spelled the name as "Berly". Children: A. Dr Joel A. Berly, born 5 April 1824, died 16 December 1888, married 17 May 1853, Laura Lavinia Suber, born about 1829 died 10 October 1867, daughter of Jacob Suber and Catherine J. Souter. John Frederick Byerly, born about 1794, Newberry County, SC. In 1836, John Frederick Byerly is recorded as wanting to leave SC (Newberry County, SC, 1836 Equities, Box 21, Pkg 4. Jacob Loner vs J. F. Berly. Bill for relief. Filed 9 January 1826. John Frederick Berly and John Berly made a note to Jacob Loner for $462.00 on 21 September 1824. They had not paid and J. F. Berly intends to move from the state.). UNCLASSIFIEDS Adam Byerley, Jr., served in SC as a patriot in the American Revolution (Book R, Nr 369, Stub Entries to Indents, Revolutioinary War Claims). He served for 70 days in 1781 under Capt William Hughes, Col Winn's Regiment at Orangeburg. Then in 1782, he served for 30 days under Capt Godfrey Dreyer at Dreyer Station, 12 mile creek. Later, he served for 30 days as a sergeant under Capt Jonathan Owen, Col Thomson's Regiment. Adam Byerley's relationship to Gasper Byerly, if any, is not known. Submitter: John T. Nichols, John T.
