Thomas Boyd Family

Thomas Boyd, Sr., is said to have been born about 1743 in Ireland.  He settled in the Spring Hill area of the Dutch Fork about the time of the American Revolution. He served in the Revolutionary  War during 1781 under Capt. William McKenzie, Col. Hill, and  Gen. Sumter.  He was also paid for provisions, rum, and Militia use, supplied 1781-1782 (Accounts Audited #673). In 1787 and 1788, tracts of land were surveyed for him in the Dutch Fork in the area of Spring Hill and on  waters of Hollingshead Creek.

Thomas Boyd's first wife was Esther Moorf, died 10 January 1803 (age 55 years), youngest daughter of John Moorf. Her tombstone has recently been discovered. She was born 4 miles from Carrick Fergus in the North of Ireland. Thoams Boyd and Esther Moorf had 8 children.

Thomas Boyd, Sr. made will 2 April 1834 and died 8 January 1835. The will mentions his children as well as a granddaughter, Elizabeth Boyd, a minor in 1834. An equity suit arose from the distribution of the property of Thomas Boyd.

According to popular legend, Thomas Boyd, Sr. as an old man, was allowed by his slaves to freeze to death on a cold winter night. His funeral was at Shady Grove church and he was buried near his home at Red Hill. Thomas Boyd erected a tombstone to his seoncd wife, Elizabeth, born 1773, died 10 April 1804 (age 29 years, 5 months, 17 days), which states that she was "not delivered ten months and 2 days after her marriage". It is possible that Boyd married a third time with the last wife being the mother of Margaret Boyd, born 17 March 1807, who married Jacob Lindler.
