John Sebastian Cook Family
At the beginning of the 19th Century, Jacob and Martin Cook lived near the present day town of Prosperity. They are believed to be sons of Sebastian Cook and Rosannah Singley. This family has been previously described by Carl W. Nichols in "The Dutch Fork Cook Family and their Early Relations" (Dutch Fork Digest IV(2): 21, 1989). In 1775, Rosannah Singling and husband, Sebastian Koch, sold to William Summer the 100 acreland grant of Rosannah Singling (South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research, Vol. 11, p. 10, 1983). Rosannah Singling, of this deed, was the daughter of Martin Singley. Late Colonial surveys for Jacob and "Posteen" Cook were adjacent each other and located just north of Prosperity. The earliest recorded deed involving these tracts is the sale in 1794 by Martin Cook of parts of both tracts to Jacob Cook (Newberry Deeds D2, p. 196). On this land is the location of the family cemetery of Jacob Cook (17771834). Daughters of Jacob Sebastian Cook and Rosanah Singley MARY BUZHEART, died 1827. Mary Buzheart was a d/o Sebastian Cook and Rosanah Singlingas she willed an item of personal estate to niece, Rosannah Cook (Newberry Wills L288). MARGARET COOK. A central question in research of this Cook family is whether Jacob and Sebastian Cook of the late Colonial land grants near Prosperity are one and the same person. Joseph Jasper Getsinger (18351905), a Baptist Minister, left an unpublished autobiographic manuscript telling that his grandmother was the daughter of Jacob Cook. His grandparents were Margaret Cook and Joseph Kitsinger who moved to Barnwell District. Joseph Getsinger d. 15 Mar 1816 and Margaret Getsinger died in 1824. Joseph Jasper Getsinger wrote of visiting his cousin in Newberry Co., Caleb Cook, son of Jacob Cook. Sons of Jacob Sebastian Cook and Rosanah Singley?. Martin Cook, born 1776, died 1846, wife named Elizabeth. Martin Cook inherited the 150 acre land grant of Jacob Cook on waters of Cannons Cr. and owned at least half of the land grant of theadjacent Posteen Cook tract (Newberry Deeds D2, p. 196 and N369). In 1794 he sold half of these grants to Jacob Cook and in 1820 he sold the remainder of the 150 acre land grant of Jacob Cook to John Adam Cook (Newberry Deeds N369). About 1820, Martin Cook moved to Green Co., AL. In 1829, Andrew and Henry Cook, sons of Martin Cook, deeded over the land of John Adam Cook to Adam Singley (Newberry Deeds P390) who shortly afterward sold to Jacob Cook (Newberry Deeds P391). A.
