Bio Jesse McCarthy Family


    Jesse McCarthy b. ca 1780 d. ca 1866, m. 1) Barbara Boland, d. ca 1814, d/o John Boland & __Feltman; m. 2), ca 1812/13, ? Bickley/Wessinger; m. 3) 18 May 1826, Nancy Anna (Annie) Weed. Jesse and Annie & several children are buried under the waters of Lake Murray, in cemetery #150 Coogler Graveyard. (Lake Murray Cemetery Records, property of Backman Amick at time of Lake Murray development).

Jesse's second wife could have been a Bickley, he owned land formerly owned by Jacob Bickley; also mentioned the Bounty land in his will.


I. Jeremiah McCartha, II, b. 2 Jan 1814, d. 18 Nov 1885, m. 1839, Emiline (Emily) Britain, b. 2 Apr 1821, d. 10 Jun 1890, d/o Alvis and Martha Worthington Britain. (Files of Herberts M. Newel, Jr., AL & John G. Rountree of St. Augustine, FL).


II. Michael Luthran McCartha, b. 9 Apr 1816, d. 15 Nov 1863, m. Mary Magdaline Martin, b. 6 Mar 1821, d. 17 Mar 1915. Both bur. Family Cemetery, near Chapin, SC.


III. David McCartha, b. 5 Jul 1819, d. 16 Oct 1893, m. 25 Feb 1841, Nancy (Rhea) Wray, b. 8 May 1817, Spring Hill area, d. 31 Oct 1873, Black Creek area, d/o Jesse Rhea and Mary Ann Eleazer. They moved from the Bear Creek area to the Black Creek area in 1845. Both bur. at Bethlehem (Black Creek) Lutheran Church, Leesville, SC.


IV. Lovelia (McCartha) Cartha, m. Harrison Dominick Stockman, b. 8 Oct 1815, d. 9 Oct 1882, s/o John Peter & Catherine Dominick Haupt/Hope Stockman; bur. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, Prosperity, SC. There is no proof of this being a d/o Jesse McCartha, however, she would be within the age bracket to a sister of Michael and John David. It is possible that the pronunciation was not clear (Can anyone clarify?)


V. Joshua McCartha, b. ca 1825, d. 25 Sep 1863, Mt. Pleasant, SC CSA m. 7 Feb 1847, Anna Lindler, b. 5 Dec 1825. Both bur. Family Cemetery, no dates; he was a Private in Co. C, 20th SC Regt, CSA. She m. 2) John Frick.


VI. Randolph McCarthy b. ca 1828, d. 14 May 1964, m. 1) unknown, d. bef. 1860; m. 2) 23 Feb 1860, Barbara C. Slice, b. ca 1838. Bur. Coogler Graveyard, #150 Lake Murray Cemetery Records, left undisturbed under waters of Lake Murray, by request of family members.


VII. Mary Ann Rebecca McCartha, b. 22 Feb 1829, d. 29 Mar 1910, bur. Oak Grove Baptist Church, Lex., Co., SC married (his 2nd wife) Michael Rish, b. 1820, d. 31 Jan 1898, s/o John and Anna Barbara Long Rish (Files of Roy G. Glover).


VIII. Harriet McCartha. b. 17 Mar 1831, d. 24 Nov 1889, m. Noah Schumpert, b. 14 May 1831, d. 11 Jul 1901, s/o Peter and Barbara __ Shumpert. Harriet's body entombed in Coogler Graveyard, #150 Lake Murray Cemetery Records; left undisturbed by request of relatives; tombstone at Boiling Springs United Methodist Church, Lexington, SC.


IX. Sally Classa Ann McCartha, b. ca 1834. Her body entombed in Coogler Graveyard, #150 Lake Murray Cemetery Records, left undisturbed by request of family members.


X. Martha Catherine (Katie) McCartha, b. 3 Feb 1838, d. 25 Apr 1927, m. Jacob Coogler, b. 6 Dec 1823, d. 13 Jun 1905, s/o Mathias and Elizabeth Weed Coogler. Jacob Coogler's first wife was Rodella Hite (18371860). Katie and Jacob are bur. in Coogler Graveyard, #150 Lake Murray Cemetery Records, left undisturbed by request of family members. Markers are at Bethel Lutheran Church, White Rock, SC
