Ulrich Sligh Family

   The progenitor of the Sligh family in the Dutch Fork of South Carolina was Hans Ulrich Schleich.  He was born 26 March 1705 in Wiesloch, Heidelberg, Baden, Germany, son of Carl Schleich and wife, Anna Barbara.  Hans Ulrich Schleich was married 1) 24 August 1728 in Weisloch, Germany, Anna Susanna Alsweiler, born on 26 November 1702 in Weisloch, Germany, and died on 26 September 1731, Germany.  In 1732, he married Catharina ____ who was born in 1710 and died on 19 January 1745.  His third marriage in 1745 was to Anna Catharina___ who was born in 1721 and was buried on 22 July 1746.  His final and fourth marriage on 18 September 1748 was to Anna Barbara Senck who was born about 1725, Germany, and died in S. C.

   The family of Ulrick Sligh arrived in S. C. in 1752 on the Cunliffe.  At that time there were four children: Eva Catherine 18; Creda 15; John Jacob 5, and Margaretta, 3 years old.  The bounty grant of 300 acres was located on Cattail Branch of Cannons Creek. This land was inherited by the oldest son, John Jacob Sligh.

   A family history for the Sligh family was compiled by Yancey Dickert and entitled "A History and Genealogy of Ulric Sligh".

 C. Margaret Sligh, born after 1837, married Jacob Blewer.

 D. Catherine Sligh, died 1826, married (1) John Uriah Wicker, died August 1808, married (2) John Peter Kinard, born about 1776, died 23 August 1828, buried in the Barre Cemetery, Pomaria, S. C.

 E. Susannah Sligh, married Jacob Livingston, born about 1785, died 24 January 1837, son of John L Livingston and Anna Margaretha Sligh.

 F. Sarah Ann Sligh, married Claiborne Lorick, died 1831.

 G. Soloman Sligh, born about 1786, died 4 May 1825, married Mrs. Mary Magdalene Houseal, born about 1777, died before 1850, daughter of John Adam Summer and Mary Reese.

 H. Mary "Polly" Sligh, born about 1790, died after 1837, married Michael Hentz.

 I.  Christianna Sligh, born about 1791, married John David Litsey, born about 1780, died about 1851.

 J. Uriah Sligh, born about 1793, died after 1837, married Elizabeth Suber, daughter of Leonard Suber and wife, Rebecca.

 K. Emanuel Sligh, born about 1784, died about 1810, married Sarah ___, born about 1784, died 18 February 1830 (Bible Reference).

2. Emanuel Sligh, Jr., born about 1807, died before 1840

3. John T. Sligh, born 27 March 1810, died 31 March 1836 (Bible Reference), married Elma Hogg, born 27 May 1809, died 16 November 1901.

               Child: Emanuel Sligh, born 16 December 1832, died 4 September 1876, married Sarah A. D. Glymph, born February 1837, died16 June 1901. (Note from submitter: Emanuel Sligh, is assumed to be the name of the father of John T. Sligh, born 1810, but proof has not been found).

II.   Anna Margaretha Schleich/Sligh, born 11 July 1749, Germany, married John L. Livingston, born about 1740, Germany, died 1799, S. C., son of Bernard Livingston, born Baden, Germany (B. 0. Prince, "Let’s Meet the Livingstons").

 F. Jacob Livingston, born about 1785, died 24 January 1837, married Susannah Sligh, daughter of John Jacob Sligh and Christianna Cromer (Newberry Will Book N, p. 70).

 G. Phillip Livingston, born about 1780, died young.

 H. Daniel Livingston, born about 1790, died 27 November 1859, married Karen Hoppock Smith.

 

III.   John Phillip Schleich/Sligh, born 9 April 1753, died 21 December 1818, married Christina Kinard, born 21 January 1761, died 25 September 1846, daughter of Martin Kinard and Mary Witt.  Phillip Sligh had a large estate on Cannons Creek north of Prosperity, S. C.

D. John Phillip Sligh, Jr., born 16 June 1792, died 7 February 1883, married Elizabeth Eichelberger, born 6 December 1800, died 12 November 1883, daughter of John Eichelberger and Anna Barbara _____.

E. (John) George Sligh, born 4 March 1795, died 5 March 1816.

F. Catherine Sligh, born 15 September 1799, died 26 October 1855, married (1) John Barre, born about 1785, died about 1820, and married (2) Andrew Cromer, Jr., born 7 October 1786, died 19 July 1858.

G. Sarah Sligh, born about 1803, died 6 April 1862, married John A. Piester (Newberry Estate 105-2682).

H. Jacob Sligh, born about 1810, died 26 March 1846, married Nancy J. Piester, born about 1814, died 3 October 1850.  Nancy remarried (2) George Neel as his second wife, household #770 Newberry 1850 census.

 

IV.   Nicholas Schleich/Sligh, born about 1755, died about 1790, married Catherine Cappleman, born 29 July 1759, died about 1791.  Catherine remarried 2) Peter Quattlebaum, born 4 April 1765.  Nicholas Sligh made will 27 September 1790, proved 16 May 1791, naming wife and sons.  An early statehood land grant to Nicholas Sligh was obtained in the Cannons Creek area of Newberry District.

B. Barbara Sligh, born 25 November 1788, died 3 June 1870, married John Frederick Cromer, born 4 December 1782, died 11 October 1856.

C. John Sligh, born about 1790, died about 1819, married Jane Cannon, daughter of John Cannon.

D. Mary Sligh, born about 1794, died about 1870, married John Setzler, born 6 August 1792, died 10 May 1845, son of John Adam Setzler and wife, Barbara.

E. Polly Sligh, born about 1798, married ____ Suber, died January 1850.

F. Jacob Sligh, born about 1799, married Catherine Souter.
